Reiki – Healing for Mind and Body

This week I am blessed to be at a yoga retreat hosted by Azulfit in Fuerteventura.  I’ll post more about my experience here regarding the island, the yoga and meditation later, but firstly I wanted to talk to you about Reiki.

Reiki is one of those treatments, lets be honest here, that sounds like either ‘mumbo jumbo’ or witchcraft.  The thought that I have paid someone money to just hover their hands over my body for an hour would baffle many people.  I can hear my dads words ringing in my ears of ‘bloody hell, they saw you coming, you mug’.

The fact is, I do have my fathers skepticism but luckily I have my mothers open spirit too so I gave it a go and the results were unbelievable.

Because of daily life stressors, imbalances in the mind and body can happen in a number of ways. These often show up as physical symptoms, which directly correlate to the energy centers (or chakras) of the body.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is about reconnecting with yourself and helping to address physical ailments (that are not caused by physical trauma) is through healing the energy body — and our patterns and stories around them.

The health of our physical body reflects the health of our energy body. Disease tends to show up in our energy body first. When we’re having physical issues, it is almost always due to the fact that our body is communicating what we have neglected to observe within ourselves.

This is why it is vital to cultivate a healthy, clear chakra system!

For instance, I neglected my energy body last year.  I had digestive problems and bad neck pain.  I had physiotherapy, ate better and changed the way I sat but it didn’t help.  Three months later I was off work crippled with depression and anxiety.  I hadn’t noticed that my physical pain wasn’t the result of an injury but an emotional block or holding pattern happening deep within.  As I started to practise self care and heal my mind, my body naturally followed suit.

Reiki really focuses on clearing and rebalancing the energy centres of the body.  Physical ailments directly correspond to different places/chakras as do emotions.  One of the most effective ways to clear blocked chakras is through the powerful practice of Reiki.

What did I feel?

Today I was laid out on a bed for 45 minutes while Yasmina, the resident therapist and Reiki master at Azulfit worked her magic.  She begins by tuning into the bodies energy and feeling where I am blocked to understand the starting point and then proceeds to slowly hover and focus above each chakra.

As someone receiving the therapy, sometimes you feel nothing, but rather than feel cheated by this, realise that’s a good thing as you probably have balance.  However, I felt something.
As her hand hovered on the top of my head, heat shot out and my scalp tingled as if I was generating electricity.  It wasn’t scary, just powerful.  The biggest change was when her hands hovered above my uterus as I felt like badness was being pulled out of my body and a spoon was stirring my insides.  After a while I saw a beautiful white light behind my eyes that made a sense of calm wash over me.  My final feeling was when her hands were at my feet; here I felt a pull of energy, as if something was being pulled out of me.

I realise to skeptics this does sound like a scene from The Exorcist and for that I apologise but it really felt like I was having tension exorcised from me.

Yasmina knew that I’d had reiki before so didn’t ask me any questions prior to the treatment.  This was great as it meant her findings were not biased by my point of view.  She explained that in scanning my body initially she felt nothing from my belly button to the tops of my thighs meaning two of my chakras were totally blocked. In addition, she felt I was hanging on to lots of anger and trauma which she pulled from me.  Interestingly I am having therapy to help me deal with emotions and let go of my past which fits with this.  From a physical point of view, I still have lower back pain and problems going to the loo (TMI I realise) which relates to this area.

I was also told that my right side of the body was blocked – the masculine side.  The male side is usually connected to our rationality, logic, linear thinking, and understanding. The female side is connected to feelings, nurturing, caring, compassion, love, and all the emotional qualities. Each of us has sides, the emotional and the mental capacity. Very few people develop both equally, therefore their cart often topples.

The female side is often emotionalism. This means we are carried away by our emotions and consequently our thinking is impaired. The quality of logical thinking, of delving into a thought process and being able to analyze, is not possible when the emotions are at the forefront.  This fits in with my chronic anxiety and depression where I can find it hard to cope with situations and feelings like others do.

At the end of the treatment Yasmina did a second body scan and told me I had energy flowing through me.  I left the room feeling lighter befor bursting into tears as if I had given myself permission to let go. I’m now writing this with a clear mind and an open heart and most importantly feeling calm.

If you fancy giving reiki a test run then ensure you find a recommended practicioner.  If you’re still not sure then have a read of my breakdown of each chakra and how to spot the imbalances that can manifest on emotional, spiritual and physical levels:

First Chakra/Root Chakra

Located between the genitals and the anus, the Root Chakra deals with the issues surrounding identity, survival, connection to Earth, and tribal issues. When this chakra is imbalanced, there are fears around survival, being provided for, and financial and family (or group) security.
Blockage in this area often happens following traumatic events, family problems, and major life changes. There may also be chronic lower back pain, sciatica, immune-related disorders, addictions, varicose veins, constipation, diarrhea, rectal/anal problems, impotence, water retention, and problems with groin, hips, legs, knees, calves, ankles, and feet.
When Reiki is performed at the Root Chakra, we have a better sense of feeling grounded and supported and begin to find relief from many of these chronic ailments.

Second Chakra/Sacral Chakra

This chakra is located about 1-2 inches below the navel. It is the chakra that deals with sex, power, money, gender, emotions, creativity, and procreation. When this chakra is imbalanced, there may lower back, pelvic, or hip problems, gynaecological imbalances (including fibroids, cysts, etc.), issues around sexual potency, relationships, abundance, power and control.
This chakra is also linked to how we express our creativity, and is also related to the Throat Chakra. Sexual abuse or trauma can create an energy block in this chakra. Reiki can help bring these deeply suppressed emotions to the surface (especially anger) and allow us to finally, fully heal.

Third Chakra/Solar Plexus Chakra

Located 1-2 inches above the navel, the Solar Plexus Chakra is our power center, and where we are connected to our self-esteem and self-protection. When we feel scattered and direct our energies outward, it is usually a sign that we have given our power away. When this happens, sometimes one can feel discomfort, or a whirling sensation, in the Solar Plexus Chakra.
Physical imbalances may manifest as anorexia or bulimia, liver or adrenal dysfunction, fatigue, stomach ulcers, diabetes, or indigestion. Emotionally, we may be afraid to step into our power, have issues around self-confidence, self-respect, feel easily intimidated, weak, closed, depressed. When Reiki is performed and these blockages are lifted, we’ve cleared the way to take action in our life.

Fourth Chakra/Heart Chakra

Located at the center of the chest, the Heart Chakra is how we tap into our Higher Selves, self-love, divine love, and Christ Consciousness. When it is imbalanced, we may physically experience imbalances in that area of the body, such as: heart issues (like congestive heart failure or heart attacks), asthma/allergies, lung cancer, breast cancer, or bronchial pneumonia.
Emotionally, we may feel lonely, disconnected from ourselves and others, resentful, depressed (due to lack of hope), grief, distrust in love, and lack of compassion. Reiki can not only help make us more compassionate, but by clearing these blockages we might also become more open to accepting love from others.

Fifth Chakra/Throat Chakra

Located in the base of the throat, the Throat Chakra helps us to speak our truth. It deals with the issues of creativity, communication, and the will to live. Physical manifestation of this chakra’s imbalances may show up as thyroid problems, TMJ, sore throat, swollen glands, or scoliosis.
Emotionally, we are afraid of silence, fearful of being judged and rejected, and imbalances in this chakra can also be connected to addiction. When Reiki is performed to help clear this chakra, we become more able to express ourselves or follow our dreams.

Sixth Chakra/Third Eye

Located between the eyebrows, the Third Eye helps us see that which is not physical. This is where our intuition lies, as well as clairvoyance and psychic perception. When this chakra is imbalanced, this may physically manifest as brain issues, such as stroke, brain tumor/hemorrhage, neurological disturbances and seizures.
Emotionally, we do not trust our insights or intuition, and may become afraid of it. Reiki can help unblock this chakra and allow us to hone in on the power of our intuition.

Seventh Chakra/Crown Chakra

Located at the top and center of the head, this chakra is our connection to the Universe, our spirituality, and our trust in life. This is the chakra from which we receive divine guidance from Source/Goddess/Higher Power. When this chakra is imbalanced, this manifests physically as depression, or as chronic exhaustion that is not linked to physical disorders.

Emotionally, we are unable to let go of anxiety and fear and there is a lack of trust in life.  When Reiki is performed, this chakra becomes unblocked and allows us to be in more touch with Divine guidance, and have more trust in life.

Working with a qualified Reiki practitioner can help you bring balance and harmony back to your chakras. Other excellent ways to rebalance the energy of the body include eating chakra-balancing foods, using essential oil therapy, Kundalini yoga and certain types of meditation – all of which I’ve tried this week and my retreat and I’ll tell you about.

Take care.
